A Flocked Bullseye Ooshie – one of just 125 believed to be in circulation across Australia – has attracted more than 100 bids, sending its price soaring to over $30,000.
While some have questioned the legitimacy of the bids, a spokesperson from eBay Australia told Yahoo Lifestyle that they have “measures in place to ensure buyers and sellers are protected.”
“Ooshies are certainly having a moment and are in high demand [and] we are continuing to monitor to make sure all of these listings abide by our rules.”
Consumer behaviour expert Dr Paul Harrison also warned shoppers not to think their rare Ooshies are worth anything simply because of one eye-watering auction.
“Price reflects a complex mix of scarcity, identity, belonging and emotion, rather than the physical object itself.”
He added, “When people have invested time collecting a set, the missing piece can become incredibly valuable to them.”
